Pearl Lagoon and Pearl Cays

Laguna de Perlas ( Pearl Lagoon ) and Cayos de Perlas ( Pearl Cays )

This is an old trip, but I thought that it was worth mentioning. We all know the stories about inhabited Caribbean Islands, pirates etc. and we wanted to visit one of those Islands. On the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua (25 miles north of Bluefields) there is a town called Pearl Lagoon, it's also the name of Nicaragua's largest coastal lagoon. It’s a small town inhabited mostly by Creoles with large population off Miskito people (link to Wiki) who mostly are fishermen.

About 20 miles from the town and about a 45 minute "panga" ride away, there is a chain of beautiful snow white islands in turquoise water – the Pearl Cays. There were once 18 pearls, but rising tides reduced the number to 12. Before they were inhabited and communally owned, now some of them were supposedly (illegally according to locals and government) bought by a foreign investor who started selling the islands one by one. Some of new owners started even building houses on the Islands.
